Baking With Betty Crocker

15/11/2014      Leave a Comment

I’ve always been against packet baking. It’s like cheating and creating a cake from scratch is one of my favourite things in the world to do. So when Betty Crocker invited me to a Christmas cake decorating class to celebrate the launch of their new vanilla icing with rainbow sprinkles I said yes but secretly thought their cakes wouldn’t be as good as “real” ones.

I was really surprised at how good they were and so easy that even Tom has manged to whip up an impressive cake or two at home using the mixes too. We created a few different things at the class and mixed the cake boxes together to create new flavour combinations. Something I’d never actually considered doing before. We combined the classic vanilla and red velvet cake the make marble loaves and crumbled chocolate chip cookies into the chocolate fudge brownie mix. This was definitely my favourite. The fudge brownies are so gooey they are actually amazing.

When I make my own frosting I always seem to make waaaaaaaay too much and I was convinced that the amount in the Betty Crocker tubs would never be enough to fill a sandwich cake and ten cover the whole thing but boy, was I wrong! Tom and I took a red velvet cake to his parents last week and it went down a storm. I busted out the vanilla icing with rainbow sprinkles and they looked mega. Any reason for rainbow sprinkles is good in my book. They’re so very pretty.

As well as all the Betty Crocker goodies I got some practice in making holly and snowflakes from icing. After my flower making workshop I think I’m getting the hang of this cake decorating malarkey. Well, maybe not getting the hang of it but definitely getting into it. It’s making me want to actually give it a go. Maybe nothing too out there but everyone has to start somewhere, right?

I had a brilliant evening, ate so many delicious goodies that I thought I was going to pop and definitely changed my mind on the box mixes being cheating. Well, no, it is still cheating a bit but I’ll totally be whipping them out when I’m short on time in future.

Have you tried any of the Betty Crocker range? What did you think of them?

Kisses,

lojo

P.S. I was devastated to find out that Betty Crocker was never a real lady and simply a character created in the 1920s. It doesn’t stop her brownies being never fail and super tasty though.
