Local History Month #BEDM

08/05/2014      4 Comments

I’m not originally from London but I do now call East London my home. Although, technically, Liverpool will always be home but you know what I mean. Right?

Anyway, as it’s Local History Month and there are loads of things in East London that I really want to do I thought I’d share the walking tours of the area that I’m most keen to do.

East London 2011 021

Street Art Tour

Alternative London run a few different tours, not just walking tours but bike tours too, if that’s the kind of thing that floats your boat. The one I most want to do though is their walking street art tour. There’s a lot of street art in and around East London and the guides for these tours are local to the area and either actively involved in the creative community or well-known street artists themselves. So the knowledge they have on the subject really is second to none. Plus, you only have to pay what you think the tour is worth. Unless you combine it with the pub tour and then it’s £20 a ticket with a drink at four boozers thrown in.

Jack the Ripper Tour

Arguably, one of the East Ends most famous sons is Jack The Ripper and lots of companies do Jack The Ripper walking tours around Whitechapel and Spitalfields. The one I’ve linked above uses RipperVision though and that alone made me choose it over the others. I love a ghost walk and always manage to creep myself out so what better than this? I think I’d prefer to leave this one until later in the year though so it’s dark and creepy when we’re walking around.

Kray-Twins

The Krays Tour

The Krays were Britain’s most notorious gangsters in the 60s and how much fun would it be to go and find out more about them. They’re East End legends so to go and visit their old stomping grounds and get a bit more insight into their lives would be brilliant. I think more recent history like this is what I find the most fascinating. That these twins ruled the London underworld hardly any time at all ago.

Just in case you’re wondering, these aren’t special tours put on for Local History Month, they’re all year round but I thought it would be a nice idea to share them with you at this time because it ties in nicely.

Are you into local history? Is there anything special going on for local history month where you are? Is there a walking tour of East London I’ve missed out and really need to look into?

Kisses,

lojo

I’m a bit fascinated by all things Ripper-related, I am planning a visit down your way one day for this very reason. As I’m actually in Liverpool I tried to do it justice in my post but there’s just SO MUCH!

Haha, I’m going to go and read it now. I’m sure you’ve done brilliantly. I used to love doing the Ghost Walks in Liverpool. Have you done one of them? I just need to find someone that fancies the Ripper walk with me 🙂 x

I haven’t but I should. I live near Croxteth Hall and they do all sorts of murder mysteries and stuff up there too – definitely fancy that! x

Do they? That would be awesome. I love Croxteth Hall x
