New Year, New Me?

03/09/2012      1 Comment

I read somewhere last week (I’m sorry I can’t remember where) that stated the writer of the piece doesn’t consider January 1st the beginning of the year. The calendar year, sure, her mental year, not so much. In fact, she continued, her year begins at the start of September and despite no longer being in education she still feels the same and I came to the realisation that I too, feel this way! (I promise that as soon as I find the article this idea spawned from I’ll link to it for you!)

Back To School

From the age of four years old, up until I was 21, my year began in September. Those long summer holidays flew by in a heartbeat and before I knew it I was being dragged around for new school shoes and revelling in buying stacks of new stationary!

Now I might not have to wait until September to shower myself in gifts from Paperchase (I’m totally obsessed with all things stationary like!) but my mind definitely resets as the summer draws to a close.

I’ve never been good at keeping New Year’s Resolutions (I’m brilliant at writing lists of them though!) and maybe this is the reason why. January never seems like a good time for a new start; it’s too soon after Christmas, you’re feeling the comedown from all the fun festivities and there are so many leftovers it would be a crime to not eat them! Why then, put yourself through the torment of some resolution that you and I both know you aren’t going to stick to?

Happy New Year

So, that’s it. This is my new year.

  • I’ve put on 2 stone in weight since I moved to London last year so that has to go.
  • I have also gotten really lazy so the exercise bike is being dragged out from underneath the cobwebs and is starting to get used.
  • I’m going to have a huge clear out and put lots of stuff on eBay to help our flat buying/wedding fund!
  • I’ve just ordered myself some new quad skates to get to a level where I can hopefully join a roller derby league.
  • I also want to start creating more. So I need to spend more time on my learning to knit and I’d like my baked creations to look a bit spiffier!
  • Finally, I need to finish getting the finishing touches for our flat. We still have no lampshades, despite living there for 6 months now!

I think that’s a good start for my new year plan. No doubt I’ll go and buy myself a new notebook soon and start it with this list. Gosh, I love lists.

How do you feel about new year’s resolutions? Do you still work to an academic calendar despite no longer being in education? What would you start fresh?

Kisses
